The standard question

Article Abstract:

Intellectual property standards are enforced by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and this raises the question of why labor and environmental standards are not enforced by the WTO as well. It is unclear that differences in labor standards distort trade, and there is a stronger case for sending aid to children in poorer countries than there is for banning goods made with child labor. Environmental problems do cross national boundaries, and external costs involved are often ignored, but trade sanctions may not be the best way to tackle this problem.

Caution needed

Article Abstract:

The Biosafety Protocol is an agreement covering trade in genetically modified organisms, which provides for the labeling of such products and for countries to be able to prevent their importation awaiting further scientific evidence that they are safe. This issue had created problems at the World Trade Organization, and US consumers are starting to become concerned, following concerns in Europe. The measures could foster protectionism and undermine free trade.
