The storm troopers: abuses prompt donor countries to reconsider aid

Article Abstract:

France is considering stopping aid to Cambodia's military police programs because of drug trafficking within police and intelligence units. French officials have informed the Cambodian government that unless military police commander General Kien Savuth is removed, France will cut off aid to train and equip the police. Savuth's police unit has been implicated in the killings of demonstrators and in the mistreatment of peasants. Australian officials likewise are disturbed by reports of drug smuggling by the Cambodian navy. Australia is providing military assistance to the navy.

Moaners beware: harassed UN reacts to negative press assessments

Article Abstract:

The UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia (Untac) has directed personnel against giving the media assessments on the political situation and Untac's operations. To counter the possible adverse effects of increasingly critical media coverage of the peace efforts, UN media control officers may be stationed in political party offices. These officers would be responsible for inhibiting possibly inflammatory materials from the political factions and correcting erroneous information regarding Untac operations.
