British economic difficulties continue despite a wide range of monetary policies enacted to combat them. The withdrawal of the pound sterling from the European exchange rate mechanism gives Britain another chance to develop a workable policy independent of the European Monetary System.

Old Tories, old danger

Article Abstract:

The UK's ruling Conservative Party, which must face a general election by spring 1997, may opt to cut taxes or interest rates to curry favor with voters. Cutting taxes in advance of a general election is a well-established Tory tactic, but the policy lacks economic justification.

Devaluing the pound: the lessons of 1967

Article Abstract:

The 1967 devaluation is analyzed in terms of its politics, international events and domestic policy concerns. It is now seen as a mistake which did not increase British productivity or growth, but was the only sensible policy choice at that time.
