The ties that bind

Article Abstract:

Surinam remains a major concern of the Dutch government even after 17 years of independence. The Netherlands' uneasy relationship with its former colony has been underlined by Dutch concerns about the South American state's troubled political landscape, which was marred by the installation of a dictatorship after a coup in 1980. Despite the establishment of a democratically-elected government in the late 1980s, Surinam's precarious democracy and equally fragile economy continue to remain a matter of deep concern within Dutch political circles. A key reason for this is the presence of over 245,000 Surinamese in the Netherlands, an expatriate community that is more than half the size of the Surinam's population of 400,000.

A few nice men

Article Abstract:

The US Navy's integrated Orlando Recruit Training Center in Orlando, FL is an attempt to reduce sexual harassment against female personnel by training male and female recruits together starting in boot camp. Integrated training, which includes everything but common sleeping quarters, should allow male and female personnel to peacefully coexist on ships, but can only succeed if male recruits change their attitudes about women's capabilities.
