The toppling of Helmut Kohl

Article Abstract:

An investigation into German campaign finance involves former chancellor, Helmut Kohl, who has admitted maintaining secret party accounts while he was leader of the Christian Democratic Union. His reaction has shocked some Germans, due to his lack of contrition and reluctance to give explanations, arguing that his actions benefited the party, so Germany as a whole. The party faces other difficulties such as lack of coherent policies and weakness in its leadership.

Kohl's shame

Article Abstract:

Helmut Kohl has resigned as Germany's Christian Democratic Union's honorary chairman following a campaign funding scandal. He kept secret accounts for the party, and will not disclose the contributors to those accounts. He has shown contempt for democracy and arrogance in refusing to apologise. There is a need for alternation of power in order to prevent arrogance from developing, and this is true for the Social Christians in Bavaria as well as for the Christian Democrats.

Germany's choice

Article Abstract:

Germany will hold elections on Sep 27 1998 and the main candidates to be chancellor are Helmut Kohl of the Christian Democrats and Gerhard Schroder of the Social Democrats. The Free Democrats have the best policies since they aim to cut taxes and subsidies more than other parties. Kohl is less convincing as a reformer since he has carried out little reform while in power. Germany would be best served by a combination of Christian Democrats and Free Democrats, whithout Kohl as leader.
