Thames bridge winners dumped in favour of D&B

Article Abstract:

Although architect Lifschutz Davidson and engineer WSP Consulting won the Hungerford Bridge competition in 1996, the client, Westminster City Council, is planning an 'adopt-and-build' scheme with a new consultative team. The project is already six months behind schedule, and the original judges will meet to discuss how the project can be salvaged. Westminster council claims that those involved in the project were aware of the adopt and built procurement route, although the design team has denied this.

The delicate trestle bridge was designed to blend into its surroundings

Article Abstract:

The Atkins/Hopkins/Schlaich Bergermann design for the Poole Harbour crossing was mainly influenced by the surrounding landscape, and resulted in a structure of inclined steel support, balancing the need for a clear span. The short span structure was favoured, although the navigation span had to be recognisable, so the arrangement of the legs was modified into the shape of an arch, allowing for additional clearance for boats.
