Among the believers: guru to the powerful casts shadow on Rao

Article Abstract:

A political scandal involving the self-proclaimed holy man and tantrik Chandraswami threatens to engulf Indian Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. The guru has long shown a phenomenal talent for cultivating wealthy and powerful friends at home and abroad, and India's leaders have typically paid homage to holy men, so their link is unsurprising. However, Chandraswami has been at the center of numerous allegations; the current one accuses him of aiding a hit man. Rao has demoted Rajesh Pilot, who ordered the guru's arrest.

The pain of Jain: Premier Rao could be entangled in corruption scandal

Article Abstract:

Prime Minister of India, P.V. Narasimha Rao, has been accused of accepting bribes along with other politicians from businessman Surendra Kumar Jain. Rao had previously remained clear of this widespread scandal. The accusations threaten the chances that Rao's Congress Party would defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party in April 1996 elections. Voters distrust politicians in general and there is tension between the Supreme Court and the executive branch of the government.
