Things fall apart; crisis looms as Khmer Rouge seeks to wreck peace

Article Abstract:

The refusal of the Khmer Rouge to co-operate with the peace efforts of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (Untac) has brought the peace process in Cambodia to a halt. Attempts by Thailand, Japan and China to meet with leaders of the Khmer Rouge to find a solution have also failed. Thai military leaders have now agreed to help enforce the sanctions that the UN is threatening to impose on the Khmer Rouge if it continues its non-co-operation. Although many countries still feel that the sanctions cannot be properly enforced, they are preparing for a trade embargo against the Khmer Rouge.

Sticking to his guns: Hun Sen spurns measures for free and fair elections

Article Abstract:

An election law was passed in Cambodia in December 1997, which established a National Election Commission to ensure that the elections to be held in July 1998 are free and fair. However, the monitors appear to already have been corrupted and prime minister Hun Sen seems unwilling to ensure that the new elections are democratic. The US, the United Nations and Asean will support the elections only if former prime minister Prince Norodom Ranarridh is allowed to return unharmed from exile but Hun Sen has rejected the conditions and criticised the international community for its demands.

Woes of a liberal

Article Abstract:

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen blames other political factions for the assassination of Tea Bun Long, a government official, and the attempted assassination of Oung Phan, the country's most famous opposition leader. He also fears that the peace process has been hurt because of questions about the government's capacity to maintain peace and order. Hun Sen hopes that the immediate intervention of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia will stop the political crimes.
