Thirst for power: Philippines' San Miguel moves closer to Cojuangco's grasp

Article Abstract:

The Sandiganbayan anti-graft court decided on Apr 8, 1992 to give back to Eduardo Cojuangco some of his 17.3% stake in the food-processing and beer giant San Miguel Corp (SMC). Cojuangco, who is running for Philippine president, could further entrench himself in the SMC Board if the government fails to disprove his claims to 32.8% stakes in the United Coconut Planters' Bank, which controls 31.3% of SMC. If that happens, he may expel chairman Andres Soriano III and associates from senior management in spite of their successful management strategies.

Age of reckoning: Japan agonises over how to pay retirees

Article Abstract:

Proposals to reform the national pension system are sparking controversy in Japan. This system ensures that all retirees over age 60 will receive an annuity equal to about 70% of their gross salaries as workers. Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa's coalition government is developing reforms because of projections that the rising percentage of people over 60 in the 21st century will make this system ruinously expensive for the active workers who pay for it. Japan's trade unions oppose a proposal to change the retirement age to 65.
