For centuries, mushrooms have been associated with magic and death in the Anglo-Saxon culture, but recently, mushrooms, especially the exotic ones, have become a popular delicacy. Many stores now stock unusual varieties and reports brisk sales. Gathering wild mushrooms is also gaining popularity.

Several summer 1997 blockbuster movies are in the science fiction genre, but there is an air of self-mockery to many of these films that may indicate the genre is in decline. The same type of self-mockery and cynism became apparent in Westerns just before that genre lost favor.
