Tight purses in Hong Kong

Article Abstract:

The stock market and economy of Hong Kong is expected to be hurt by the domino effect started by a 4.5% decline in the country's tourist arrivals for January 1997 to August 1997. A prolonged drop in tourists' spending into Hong Kong is expected by observers to cause a reduction in spending for residents working in the service, retail and hotel industries. The decline of tourist arrivals into Hong Kong was partly attributed to Asia's economic downtown in Asia as travelers from the region into Hong Kong drop.

Putting a crimp on bargains

Article Abstract:

Some hoteliers and travel agencies in Southeast Asia have resorted to quoting their prices in US dollars in order to protect their businesses from further currency fluctuations. The hotel industries in Bangkok, the Philippines, and Indonesia have agreed to use dollars to quote prices, resulting in significantly higher rates than in other countries. The high rates have prompted some officials in Indonesia to complain about the excessive prices which have negatively affected the local industry.
