Time to reclaim the city?: the Town & Country Planning Association conference saw a fierce debate over solutions to the UK's projected housing crisis

Article Abstract:

Although the Town & Country Planning Association (TCPA) advocates 4.4 millin new households over the next 18 years, the figure is nearer 3.5 million, as many of the extra households have already been accommodated. There is a target for 60% of those households required to be sited on urban or brownfield sites, but there are arguments that new homes should be where new jobs are. At the TCPA conference there was argument that denser urban housing an benefit city dwellers, making public transport more viable and allowing more contact with neighbours.

Light transports of delight?: New tram and light-rail systems are making a hesitant mark, but are only receiving lukewarm government encouragement

Article Abstract:

Three light-rail schemes will begin carrying passengers this autumn, but some schemes, backed strongly by city councils and passenger transport authorities are being turned down by central government on environmental or economic grounds. Midland Metro promoters were forced to scale down their original plans and the government has made it clear that the majority of finance for most schemes must come from concessionaires that build and run systems, with contributions from commercial firms.

Making the most of regeneration sites

Article Abstract:

UK government regulations concerning the building of new commercial development sites will ensure builders of new office facilities will have to make full use of existing brownfield or previously used sites. The British Council for Offices (BCO) suggests the government should consider the shift in economic prosperity between the north and south and even further discrepancies within each individual region. Investment on infrastructure would help the need for more commercial buildings.
