Tit for tat

Article Abstract:

Violence between Shia and Sunni Moslem sects has escalated in Pakistan, adding to the country's woes, and the results could potentially topple the Bhutto government. The Shias, former supporters of Bhutto, have joined with a coalition of opposition parties to protest what they perceive as favorable treatment of the Sunnis. In addition, Bhutto has to contend with a general increase in lawlessness, with murders, robberies, and bombings on the increase, an industrial shutdown over the additional imposition of $1 billion in taxes, and allegations of corruption.

Trouble, trouble

Article Abstract:

Violence is affecting economic recovery in Pakistan. The Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, had hoped that his Muslim League had reached an agreement with the Muhajir Qaumi Movement (MQM), but the MQM is seeking further concessions that the government is unable to provide. The army is seeking a national plan for economic revival and a clamp-down on extremism before it will help. There could also be problems with the return of Pakistanis who have fought in Afghanistan.

Delayed action

Article Abstract:

Pakistani president Farooq Leghari seems to be losing the support of the military as no clear results are emerging from his promise to deal with political corruption. His interim government has been criticised by Islamic parties and the media, and anonymous bomb attacks are causing great social unrest. Many observers do not expect elections to be held by the deadline of Feb 3, 1997, especially as it is not yet known who will be allowed to participate.
