To soothe anger over subsidies, U.S. cotton tries wooing Africa

Article Abstract:

Africa is urging the World Trade Organization to stop federal farm subsidies in the United States and Europe. In response America has sent trade envoys to help Africa improve productivity. Western countries have heavily subsidized their farmers, the improved operations promoting overproduction and lower prices which has cut into revenue for nonsubsidized farmers in developing countries.

Seeds of doubt; once quick converts, U.S. farmers grow wary of GM crops; DuPont and others, mindful of their R&D billions, struggle to hold ground

Article Abstract:

Sales of genetically modified seeds to U.S. farmers have been robust for three years, but consumers are clamoring for safety first. So even though farmers like the GM seeds and are willing to pay more to get it, they must buy what consumers will buy and eat. This is worrying the biotech firms like Monsanto that have spent tens of billions of dollars to get this far with GM seeds.
