Tokyo sets tobacco agenda: information and regulation goals proposed

Article Abstract:

The Health and Welfare Ministry of Japan has proposed numerical targets to lessen the incidence of deaths caused by lung cancer by 2010. The plan involves the regulation of smoking in public areas as well as the dissemination of more information from cigarette companies. The proposal is based on reports that lung cancer, which is caused by smoking, has become the deadliest cancer in the country and that smoking has become more prevalent among minors and young women in Japan.

Lifting the smoke screen: Vietnam may ease cigarette-promotion rules

Article Abstract:

A proposed amendment to the Commercial Law is scheduled to be passed by Vietnam's National Assembly lifting one of the strictest cigarette advertising regulations in the world. The current law prohibits the merest suggestion of a cigarette brand but the amended law will allow all kinds of cigarette promotion provided that it does not apply to people under 16 years old. The ban on media advertising, however, remains in full force.

Hong Kong bans giveaway

Article Abstract:

The Hong Kong government has prohibited giveaway promotions by cigarette companies as a new public-health legislation was implemented. Prior to the ban, the cigarette packet trade-in marketing strategy was still being employed in the city. This kind of promotion has long been criticized by antismoking activists who feared that the campaigns are aimed at young, potential smokers.
