Tokyo's move to rescue battered banks faces resistance from Japanese public

Article Abstract:

The Japanese public has voiced its discontent over the Japanese government's move to rescue the crisis-plagued financial industry. The rescue package allocates $6.7 billion in public funds for the dissolution of seven housing loan companies severely affected by the crisis. Further infusions of public funds may be made. Japanese Prime Min. Tomiichi Murayama pleaded for understanding from taxpayers, saying the crisis worsens as no action is made.

Daiwa's strength changes aura of Japanese banks

Article Abstract:

Many foreign investors expressed concern over the viability of Japanese banks after a spate of financial problems. However, Daiwa Bank Ltd.'s announcement that it can absorb up $1.1 billion in losses has renewed confidence among some investors. Among the different Japanese banks, analysts and investors identified Sanwa Bank, Fuji Bank, Sumitomo Bank and Asahi Bank as the four most promising investments in the Japanese banking industry.

Lower fund costs enhance stock of regional banks

Article Abstract:

Many analysts are predicting that Japan's regional banks will become an increasingly attractive option for investors as funding costs continue to go down. Unlike their larger counterparts, Japan's regional banking institutions do not have problems with massive bad-debts and they are among the most financially-sound entities in the country.
