Told you so

Article Abstract:

Singapore's economy has made a dramatic rebound in the second quarter of 1993, showing a 10.1% rise in gross domestic product from the previous year. Economists had cautioned that the high savings rate of Singaporeans would keep growth rates low, but the country's strong export sector has managed to off-set and drop in domestic consumer spending. Export growth rose 20% in the second quarter while domestic demand growth slowed to 12%. A strong currency and low inflation should keep Singapore rolling.

Great expectations

Article Abstract:

The slowdown in Singapore's rate of economic growth may mean that the country is entering a recession. The value of total trade fell by 4.5% in the first half of 1992 as compared to the same period in 1991. Moreover, the rate of growth of gross domestic production for 1992 is likely to fall below 5%. The growth rate, however, is likely to improve because the economy is fundamentally strong. The government plans to review its economic policy and concentrate on cutting business costs.

Slight slowdown

Article Abstract:

Singapore's economy showed some signs of recovery in the 1st qtr of 1993. Two important sectors, manufacturing and financial services, did well enough to contribute to a 7.1% rise in gross domestic product (GDP), compared to the 5.8% average GDP growth for all of 1992. However, weak growth in 1992 may be making the current figures look better than they really are. The slow growth of the US, Japanese and EC markets could affect Singapore's exports.
