Too many gilts for comfort

The Bank of England intends to finance a large share of the UK's 50 billion pound public sector borrowing requirement for 1993-94 through sales of gilts to foreign investors, but foreign buyers have been slow to buy UK securities since Britain left Europe's exchange-rate mechanism.

Article Abstract:

The British government is expected to borrow at a rate that is expected to be 8% of the nation's GDP in 1993 and 1994. Government bonds are expected to be made available in quantities not seen in nearly 20 years. How many takers there will be remains to be seen.
