Article Abstract:

The cosmetics and toiletries market in Hungary is dominated by hair care, bath and shower, and skin care sectors, which account to more than 50% of the total cosmetics and toiletries revenues in Hungary from 1993 to 1997. Growth in the largest segment, hair care, however, significantly dropped by 19.1% during the five-year review period due to the increased purchasing power of the people. Meanwhile, the baby care segment secured a low market share due to the decline in birth rates in Hungary. In contrast, the skin care sector posted the highest sales growth of 102.4% from 1993 to 1997 due to aggressive advertising campaigns in the country.

Market sectors: make-up & colour cosmetics

Article Abstract:

The make-up and color cosmetics sector of the cosmetics and toiletries market in Hungary has reported sales of $29.1 million at current prices in 1997 from $28.2 million in 1996 and $24.2 million in 1993. The sector reported a sales growth of 20% from 1993 to 1997, which is however significantly lower than the overall industry growth. During the review period, consumers grew to prefer the "natural look" and have become more health conscious resulting to shift from make-up products to protective skin care and sun care products. These new fashion trends have triggered make-up and color cosmetics makers to change their product lines.
