Scottish Members of Parliament favoring home rule are battling angrily with those who do not. The Scottish Nationalist Party voted to cooperate with the Labour Party in an attempt to promote a Scottish referendum. A good deal hinges upon Prime Minister John Major's appointment of shadow Scottish secretary.

The power of sleaze

Prime Minister John Major has expressed the opinion that the public wants to concentrate on real policy issues during the 1997 election campaign in the United Kingdom, but this seem doubtful. The public generally finds 'real issues' boring, and stories of sleaze deplorable but interesting.
