Toy stories for grown-ups

Article Abstract:

Japanese animated movies are more demanding and are geared to adults as well as children, in contrast to US animated offerings. Mainstream movies have undergone a decline in Japan some some 20 years, while animated movies have become more important. The popularity of manga, or japanese comics, has helped the development of animated movies. Critics argue that Japanese characters are drawn to appear to be more Caucasian in animated movies, which leads to questions about identity. Animated movies may also allow for greater freedom of expression than traditional movies.

Barrel or Bard?

Article Abstract:

'Shakespeare in Love' has the most Oscar nominations, but may not win the Oscar championship since it is a comedy, and comedies tend not to achieve this award. Movies tend not to win if a director has not been nominated, so 'Elizabeth' is ruled out. Gwyneth Paltrow could be awarded the best actress prize for her role in 'Shakespeare in Love', while Nick Nolte could also receive an award for his work in 'Affliction'. James Coburn from the same movie could receive an award for the best supporting actor.
