Merger talk boosts shares of Tractebel

Article Abstract:

Tractebel, an electricity and gas provider, has seen its shares rising due to rumors on a possible merger with its subsidiary, Electrabel, and closer ties to its parent company, Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux. Tractebel's shares increased 6.5% on June 10, 1998, to close at 5,540 Belgian francs, or $150.80, per share, while Electrabel's shares rose 80 francs to close at 9,620 francs. The speculation over a Tractebel-Electrabel merger is driven by a series of major deals involving the French holding company, Suez Lyonnaise. Suez Lyonnaise's moves are considered as preparation for securing its control over its 50%-owned Tractebel unit, and Tractebel's 40%-owned Electrabel unit. Electrabel and Tractebel also announced a joint venture to trade in the electricity markets of Norway and Sweden.
