Traffic jams unstuck

Article Abstract:

The South Korean government is planning a high-speed rail link between Seoul and Pusan to relieve the congestion on the 420-km long Seoul-Pusan highway. The railroad scheme has come under fire from the opposition parties, one of which accuses the Roh Tae Woo administration of accepting payoffs from Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, a company which is competing for the railroad contract, whereas the other demands that the government should not build such high-speed rail links till South Korean companies acquire the technology in a few years.

Walk, don't run: US evacuation plan could be stalled by traffic

Article Abstract:

Any evacuation scenario for South Korea must take into account the incessant traffic jams plaguing Seoul, a city of 10 million people. The US military's contingency plan in case of war for transporting 40,000 US citizens and 10,000 'designated foreign nationals' calls for using 'pre-designated ground transport' to get people from Seoul to an area south of the city, where they could board aircraft. One important detail the plan does not specify is which foreign nationals will be chosen from among the many non-US citizens in South Korea.

Traveller's tales

Article Abstract:

The Unification Church, headed by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, held a mass wedding of 20,000 couples in the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, South Korea. The event's purpose was to reaffirm the church's unique Christian gospel among its members and to spread the faith to non-believers. The newlyweds hardly knew each other as the Reverend chose their partners for them, but the success of their marriages relies on the creation of a family devoted to the Church as the family and family values is its central theme.
