Traveller's tales

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's Taruna Nusantara is a paramilitary high school that is financed by the Armed Forces under the jurisdiction of civilians. It is located in the island of Java and aims to instill the sense of discipline and patriotism among its students. The students are specially selected for their academic excellence, athletic proficiency, creative talents and leadership ability. They are secluded from the popular culture and trained in a highly spartan environment. These are privileged in the sense that they are all scholars and allowed to choose their careers after graduation.

Traveller's tales

Article Abstract:

The extravagant cremation in Bali in honor of the Raja of Gianyar's late wife, mother, two stepmothers and two of his late father's concubines was symbolic of the Balinese solemn observance of rituals. They take Hinduism very seriously and their mysticism is startling to non-Hindus and strange to Hindus of other nations. This attitude toward their religion is what distinguishes them from other places that are popular among tourists.

Traveller's tales

Article Abstract:

Aceh is Indonesia's northernmost and its most devoutly Muslim province. The Acehnese are a incorrigibly independent people and have been waging a war for autonomy under the leadership of Sweden-based exile Hasan di Tiro. As evidence of the political conflict in the province, residents pay dual taxes. Both the central government and the Aceh Merdeka autonomy movement have a share in the tax payments.
