Trouble on shore

Article Abstract:

The Malaysian government is concerned about its growing number of illegal immigrants from Indonesia. Malaysia is accustomed to a small inflow of immigrants but, in the 20 days up to Mar 1 1998, the Malaysian police detained 3,971 immigrants as they arrived by boat from Indonesia. This figure is around 75% of the total number of illegal immigrants for the whole of 1997. The Malaysian government anticipates that the influx will continue due to Indonesia's worsening economic situation, and it is concerned that it will create serious social problems in Malaysia.

Crackdown

Article Abstract:

Malaysia currently has an estimated 1.75 million migrant labourers out of a workforce of 8 million, with only 750,000 of the 1.75 million legally employed. The government is now taking much firmer action against the use of migrant labour, especially as the growing presence of migrant labourers is causing serious social unrest. Under new regulations, foreigners who marry local people will be deported, while the Immigration Act has been amended and has strict new penalties added.

Article Abstract:

Alleged mistreatment and malnourishment of illegal immigrants in Malaysia has sparked a storm of controversy. Some 40 have died at holding centers in the past 18 months, most of them Bangladeshis.
