Turbulence ahead

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's Speaker Liu Sung-pan remains optimistic that factionalism in both the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party and in the oppositionist Democratic Progressive Party will not hamper legislative efficiency. KMT has been split into three groups, namely the Wisdom Coalition, the New Kuomintang Alliance and the Parliamentary Reform Association. The Wisdom Coalition represents the native Taiwanese in the traditional conflict with those from mainland China, whose interests are served by the New Kuomintang Alliance. Denouncements of lawmakers enriching themselves through office have also added to the problem.

The hollow centre: poll result undermines president's power

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese Pres Lee Teng-hui's Kuomintang (KMT) party suffered a setback in the Dec 19, 1992 polls. It won only 53% of votes, while the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won 31%. Most KMT losers were those associated with factional politics and financial scandals. The increase in pro-China legislators who support Premier Hau Pei-tsun, is a threat to Lee, as unification with China will be demanded. Lee will, therefore, try to ensure key positions for his supporters in the KMT and cabinet.

Rough and tumble

Article Abstract:

Taiwan is theoretically a democratic country, but its politicians seem unwilling or unable to follow democratic principles. They still prefer confrontation to compromise and are not adverse to hindering the flow of political debate in extreme ways. The problems are being made worse by lack of clarity regarding what kind of government the country actually has. While this situation continues, it is inevitable that governing institutions will sometimes be unable to operate.
