Turkish delight at Telekom constitutional ruling

Article Abstract:

There is considerable international confidence in the planned partial sale of Turk Telecom, which has now been approved by the country's Islamist-led government. Prime minister Necmettin Erbakan seems to have strong commitment to privatisation, which he regards as having the potential to reduce inflation and increase support for his Refah party. The government will retain 51% of Turk Telecom, with the postal service holding 10%, employees and small investors holding 5% and 34% being sold to strategic investors.

Turks' new optimism

Article Abstract:

Turkey is carrying out a privatization program which has met a number of obstacles. The program was begun in the 1980s and problems include public opposition and financial problems of purchasers, both of which have led to the abandonment of sales. Turk Telekom is among the more attractive companies, but political opposition and legal difficulties could hamper sales of profitable concerns. The government needs cash and is under pressure to sell assets.
