Obscure and complex insurance products alienate consumers and make the industry appear unattractive, claims Zurich Financial Services UK Life chief executive Ray Greenshields. Insurers are 'obsessed' with complex products, but products are just services which should be clear to the consumer, he says. Financial advisers should also appreciate the social contribution they make via their work and should cease questioning their professionalism, says Greenshields.

UK: CANADA LIFE LAUNCHES ANNUITY PRODUCT

Canada Life has launched a new annuity option product that allows clients to buy a five-year guaranteed annuity and then start over again. This will allow clients to take advantage of future rises in the value of funds under management and to take advantage of rises in annuity rates. The product has been welcomed and is revolutionary in terms of its flexibility.

UK: Sipp offshore investors await IR decision

The Inland Revenue (IR) has put on hold its decision on whether Sipp investors with offshore life insurance holdings will still be able to claim tax relief if the company is registered outside the European Economic Area. A consultation paper on personal pensions and annuities covering Sipps is expected to be published before Christmas 2001.
