UK: CML warns new rules could cause job losses

Article Abstract:

The Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) says that the FSA's draft mortgage regulations are unworkable and could force many mortgage advisers out of business. The main problem is the proposal that 'reasonable steps' be taken by lenders to regulate brokers, while the N3 deadline of August 2003 is said to be unrealistic because of the lengthy changes that will have to be made to IT systems.

Article Abstract:

The Financial Services Authority (FSA) is anticipating a drop in the number of mortgage advisers to 30,000, from 46,000 as a result of mortgage regulation. Some 25% of UK lenders could also be pushed out of the market, with those with outstanding loans of under GBu 5bn most at risk.
