UK selects supplier for Type 45's marine gas turbines

Article Abstract:

Northrop Grumman Marine Systems, Rolls-Royce Marine and DCN Indret have a received a contract under the UK Type 45 destroyer program. The consortium created by the three companies has been required to supply WR-21 marine gas turbine engines for the first three Type 45s of a planned class of 12. The WR-21 was chosen because it provides 25%-27$ fuel savings in mechanical drive configurations and between 40%-50% in electric drive configurations. In addition, it significantly lowers exhaust fume temperature and produces low airborne and structure borne noise.
