UK shortlists for the next four rail franchises

Article Abstract:

The InterCity East Coast, Midland Mainline, Network South-Central and Gatwick Express franchises have a number of short-listed candidate companies, according to OPRAF, the British rail franchiser. Pre-qualifying bids for Cardiff Railway and South Wales & West Railway franchises have also been requested, with the additional possibility of the West Coast Main Line franchise in the near future. Each franchise will be offered as a 15-year contract, on the condition that the franchise company invests in rolling stock and that the service is relatively inexpensive.

Railtrack float launched

Article Abstract:

The sale of Railtrack, the United Kingdom British Rail company, is expected to go ahead during 1996, barring unforeseeable hold-ups such as an early general election. 30% of the shares will be offered to the retail sector, with institutional investors being offered a book-built, open-priced international tender offer. All shares in the company will be sold so that no protection against foreign take-over will be provided, although a future Labour government's reversal policy is covered.
