U.K.'s Oftel orders cut in mobile-phone rates

Article Abstract:

The U.K.'s Office of Telecommunications (Oftel), ordered Vodafone Group Plc and Cellnet to cut the cost of calls to mobile phones from fixed-line phones. The move follows and investigation of mobile phone rates by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission at the request of Oftel. Vodafone and Cellnet together control roughly 70% of U.K. mobile phone customers, while British Telecommunications Plc has more than 85% of U.K. fixed-line customers. Under the decision, BT customers calling a Vodafone or Cellnet mobile phone will pay 22 pence a minute instead of 30 pence a minute.
