US and Japan as partners

Article Abstract:

The collapse of the former USSR has forced a reassessment of the security relationship between the US and Japan. It has been emphasized by some observers that Japan is still not capable of fulfilling its role in international security even as the primary responsibility of the US military shifts toward the control of regional conflicts. The US-Japan relationship can also be improved by granting the Japanese Self Defense Force. As the role played by Japan in international security increases, it is likely that its military forces will regain the world recognition.

Japan eyes bigger stick, warily

Article Abstract:

President Clinton's recent visit to Japan reaffirmed the US commitment to maintaining security in East Asia. The threats posed by North Korea and Chinese ambitions in the region require continued US-Japanese cooperation. Both countries may want to reevaluate the military constraints imposed by terms of the Japanese Constitution. Changes to the Constitution's security amendments should be carefully considered and debated in planning an expanded role for Japan to cooperate with the US on military matters.

Where Japan can help

Article Abstract:

Japan can help ensure world peace and stability in the aftermath of the Cold War. Its re-election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council may help the country play a more active role in the organization. Although Japan is the second-biggest financial contributor to the world body, it wields minimal influence in UN policy-making and international relations.
