U.S. commercial banks face the future

Article Abstract:

The commercial banking industry in the U.S. is a highly competitive business with much less regulation and increased risks such as changes in interest rates, inflation, and deflation. A result of deregulation and economic changes has been the advent of foreign competition. In 1973, U.S. manufacturing companies borrowed 7.6 percent of their money from foreign banks whereas in 1983 that amount has gone up to 18.5 percent. A major point of contention is the geographic limitation imposed by the McFadden Act of 1927, although today there are more than 7,000 loan offices in states other than the banks' home base. Projections indicate that the number of commercial banks in the U.S. will decrease to about 11,000 institutions from 14,000 in 1985.

European Commission must decide to proceed with the Vredeling directive

Article Abstract:

The European Community favors the application of the 'new approach' to the relations between multinational corporations (MNCs) and the labor movement. This directive, known as the Vredeling directive, could give workers rights to information and consultation on business policy matters that directly affect their livelihood. Some members of the European Community fear that the application of this new approach may worsen the business climate, causing increased unemployment.
