U.S. steel tariffs may continue

U.S. President George W. Bush is not expected to terminate tariffs for the steel industry, despite possible sanctions from the World Trade Organization. Bush imposed the tariff in order to stabilize the American steel industry.

USX decides to separate U.S. Steel, Marathon Oil

USX Corp. is planning to separate Marathon Oil and U.S. Steel into individually-traded firms. The move will end USX's 25-year effort to use oil to offset any downward cycles in the steel industry.

Geneva Steel shuts most operations, lays off many staff

Geneva Steel has terminated the majority of its operations and has laid off most of its workforce, which numbers 1,400. The company may have file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
