US upgrades tactical air reconnaissance

Article Abstract:

The US Air Force and the Air National Guard (ANG) are to conduct flight trials and testing of the Theater Airborne Reconnaissance System (TARS) and its related ground station. The tests, which will be conducted at the USAF's Flight Test Center and the ANG's Air Force Reserve Test Center, will involve five ANG squadrons of F-16C Block 30 fighters with 20 TARS pods. The TARS pods will contain a Recon/Optical CA-260/25A framing sensor, which will be improved following the delivery of the Medium Altitude Electro Optical (MAEO) sensors and related circuit cards to the basic TARS pods. The MAEO pods will allow pilots to view targets from altitudes above 15,000ft for under-the-weather daytime imagery collection.

USAF enhances F-117 targeting

Article Abstract:

The US Air Force is evaluating a system that would allow F-117 fighters to receive and send targeting data while flying. The program, known as Integrated Real-time information into the cockpit/Real-time information out of the cockpit for Combat Aircraft (IRRCA), has already completed the 'into the cockpit' phase and is set to start in 1999 the 'out of the cockpit' phase. The capacity to manage real-time information about threats, targets and the weather is achieved via a new real-time symmetric multiprocessor. The processor receives threat data via satellite and evaluates the new information. If their are changes that are likely to affect the mission, the processor alters the F-117's planned route.

US integrated reconnaissance pod is based on F-9120 sensor

Article Abstract:

Lockheed Martin Fairchild Systems has developed the Advanced Airborne Reconnaissance System (AARS) for use with various types of fighter aircraft including the F-16 and the F-18. The AARS is made up of the F- 9120 sensor and the F-985 ultra high-resolution electrooptic framing camera. The F-9120 provides simultaneous visible and infrared horizon-to- horizon stero imaging using three fields-of view. Other components of the AARS are a reconnaissance recorder, a 200n mile line-of-sight Common Data Link, two electronics boxes and an environmental control system.
