Uncharted waters

Article Abstract:

The Assn of South East Asian Nations (Asean) ministerial meeting on Jul 23-24, 1993 resulted in an agreement to set up a formal Asean Regional Forum. The new body will discuss political and security matters, long touchy subjects for Asean, and will include the US, Canada, the EC and most of the major non-Asean countries in eastern Asia and the Pacific. It will seek to engage the greater region in a dialogue about security and political issues, and is predicated on continuing good relations.

Seeds of division

Article Abstract:

The Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean) is divided on whether to admit Myanmar. A crackdown on the opposition in Myanmar has been opposed by the European Union and United States. Asean does not wish to appear to be subject to pressure from western governments and technical reasons have been given for delays. Some countries such as the Philippines are les keen for Myanmar to join Asean, while others such as Malaysia and Singapore are keener for Myanmar to become a member.
