Under the volcano: a boom in Java is eroding traditional ways, exacerbating economic inequalities and triggering violent eruptions. This is the story of how one family struggles to hold its own (includes related article)

Article Abstract:

Java is being rapidly transformed economically, with a rush of consumerism which has left some behind. This has led to violence with major riots taking place, mostly against ethnic Chinese. In Indonesia the family is still the bedrock of society and the plight of a Javanese family amidst disintegrating traditions and increasing modern pressures is described. Their commercial failure is blamed on the ethnic Chinese shopkeepers and the increase in new supermarkets which offer lower prices than the small shops. The lack of opportunity and the increase in the number of unemployed young men leading to a fall in social status is discussed.

Muslim religious leaders have strongly opposed the government proposal. The intermarrige debate has raised fundamental questions of family loyalty, religious conviction and gender relations within Indonesia's multi-ethnic society.

Pilgrim's progress: embattled minister heads for Mecca

Article Abstract:

Indonesian Information Minister Harmoko is making a pilgrimage to Mecca following strong public criticism of his incorrect recitation of a Koranic verse as a shodow puppeteer. Harmoko has repeatedly tried to downplay the July incident, but apologies were insufficient, compounded by a belief that he was treated far more easily than was govt critic and soothsayer Permadi Satrio Wiwoho, initially sentenced to seven months in prison for criticizing the Prophet, a lesser offense.
