The area encompassing Yorkshire, Humberside and southern Teesside, England, has moved on from its dependency on heavy industries, including mining and steel-making. It has developed as a major centre for financial activities and businesses using new technology. The city of Leeds has become Britain's second centre for financial services, and the region is the home of some major banks and building societies including the Halifax. However, national and global effects continue to take their toll on industrial employment in the region, with the strength of sterling and the Asian crisis being major factors in 1998.
