Unilever to cut jobs and close factories; consumer goods firm to focus on core brands

United Kingdom's consumer goods conglomerate Unilever PLC has announced plans to reduce its workforce and close factories as part of its restructuring plan. Unilever will cut 15,000 positions, close 100 factories and focus on its major brands in order to improve its financial performance.

Unilever renames Jif to Cif in U.K. to simplify brand

Unilever PLC is renaming Jif, its best-selling household cleanser, Cif. The brand, which is known as Cif in other countries, will retain its same packaging, price, and logo. This kind of brand streamlining will enable Unilever to cut marketing and production expenses.

U.K. tourism industry is readying a hard sell

The tourism industry of Britain is preparing a marketing plan, called Great Value Britain, that will sell the U.K. as a bargain vacation destination. Great Value Britain will include hotel discounts of as much as 50% at major chains with properties in London and parts of the countryside affected by travel restrictions to deal with the foot-and-mouth epidemic.
