Using certified mail in industrial research

Article Abstract:

Mail surveys play an important role in business, government, and economic research. Despite a legion of material written on the general topic, almost no published research is available on the effectiveness of using certified mail in the research process. This article reports the results of an experiment designed to determine the effects of using certified mail in industrial survey research. The results of this research suggest that certified mail, when properly used, may be an effective and efficient tool in business research. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Mail response rates from distributors

Article Abstract:

To forecast demand for a new product, information was sought from a national sample of 600 medical equipment dealers by means of a mail survey. The critical managerial question for this research was whether a new product inventor wishing to obtain information from the sample should employ a university sponsor, offer monetary incentives, or go it alone. The results indicate that monetary incentives and university sponsorhip are effective ways to obtain information. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Facsimile transmission versus mail delivery of self-administered questionnaires in industrial surveys

Article Abstract:

The authors investigate whether the use of facsimile transmission of questionnaires to industrial populations can improve response as compared to mail surveys. The authors demonstrate in a two-phase empirical study that facsimile-transmitted questionnaires generated similar response rates as did questionnaires delivered and returned by mail, but had significantly faster response and lower total cost.
