VARDHAMAN POLYTEX: Y(E)ARNING FOR GROWTH

Article Abstract:

Vardhaman Polytex, a part of the Vardhaman group, produces yarns of the cotton, acrylic and blended types. It has 3 units at Bhatinda and Ludhiana in Punjab and at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh. These units have a combined capacity of 55,520 spindles and 504 rotors for yarn spinning and 8,000 spindles for worsted spinning. The company's 100 percent export oriented unit, with a capacity of 25,000 spindles, started commercial production in September 1997. It posted a net profit of Rs24.63 crore on sales of Rs174.15 crore in 1997-98. Its scrip is currently trading at Rs39.50. (khr)

Article Abstract:

Shreekrishna Petro (SP) makes knitted fabrics for garments. It is expanding its capacity from 18,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) to 25,000 tpa. In 1997-98, its sales were Rs447.38 crore (Rs371.60 crore in 1996-97). Its net profit was Rs55.28 crore (Rs49.08 crore). In the 6 months ended March 1998, it made a net profit of Rs19.85 crore. Its equity was Rs28.08 crore. Its earning per share was Rs17.47. The book value of its share is Rs78.1. Its scrip is traded at Rs25.50. (rk)

Article Abstract:

In 1997-98, the sales of Orient Syntex (OS) of Mumbai fell by 50 percent to Rs13.01 crore. Its net loss was Rs9.78 crore. It made a net loss of Rs16.24 crore on sales of Rs27.58 crore in the 15 months ended March 1997. Its reserves fell to Rs12.08 crore. It has been referred to the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction. It manufactures blended yarns. These facts and figures have been given in reply to a question of a reader. (rk)
