Variations on an Arts & Crafts theme. (Lucy Cavendish college, new hall of residence)

Article Abstract:

Lucy Cavendish is a college for graduate and undergraduate mature women and the increasing number of students meant that additional space was required. Van Heyningen and Haward were the architects selected for the new buildings which are arranged as fingers projecting into the gardens to achieve scale similar to existing houses. The new residential buildings relate to the geometry of Barrmore House.

Arts and crafts setting: Associated Architects' redevelopment of the University of Central England School of Jewellery enables new technologies to enhance the traditional craft and buildings of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter

Article Abstract:

Associated Architects was chosen to redevelop the School of Jewellery in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, which had outgrown its Grade II listed buildings. The new building incorporates process workshops on each floor along with adjoining studio workshops using glazed partitions to encourage interaction between students. The workshops are grouped around the atrium linked to the existing buildings.

Learning about resources: Derby University's learning resource centre makes passive energy features part of a low-energy, low-cost, low-risk building

Article Abstract:

Derby University's new learning resource centre (LRC) by architect David Lyons and Associates, has a combination of active and passive energy features. The main features include open-pan floors around atria, natural cross-ventilation and stack ventilation, and exposed concrete floor soffits allowing accessible thermal mass.
