Video pirates are arrested: firms want more action against counterfeiting

Article Abstract:

The Hong Kong Independent Commission Against Corruption has conducted a raid on video and software pirates, arresting 18 people and confiscating 33 production lines of video CD and CD copying equipment which could supply the whole Chinese and Hong Kong VCD and CD markets with legitimate products. The raid was estimated to put a very small dent in the operations of Hong Kong VCD and CD pirates, which is estimated to have from 100 to 250 production lines for producing counterfeit disks. But officials of the international entertainment and software industries believe that the raid would only scare the pirates to Macau, which already has between 180 to 300 production lines. The industry estimates a loss of $20 mil for the entertainment industry and $700 mil for the software industry due to piracy.

Democracy has weak vote: two candidates face very different challenges

Article Abstract:

The 1998 Hong Kong elections may turn out to be skewed in favor of pro-Beijing candidates as the whole electoral system seems bent on ensuring that a safe pro-Beijing majority is elected, according to political science professor Joseph Cheng. The differences are brought about by limited participation rules that highlight a loophole in the election law. This loophole has been corrected and now allows pro-Beijing candidates to win through 'functional constituency' rules.
