Argentina: a bumpy road

Article Abstract:

A World Trade magazine interview with US MERCOSUR representative Manuel Rocha on Argentina indicates that he is optimistic about the future prospects of Argentina and its trade relations with other nations despite the election of a new president. Rocha believes that the magnitude and depth of Argentina's profound economic transformation and its existing economic model will be accepted by anyone aspiring to be its president. Thus, Rocha is sure that its new leader will remain committed to maintaining close relations with the US.

Christopher Ashby, the US ambassador to Uruguay for almost the past two and a half years, stressed that Uruguay is a very interesting country for US firms to do business with because it has a life expectancy rate and literacy rate that are on par with the US. Vietnam trade eased, but restraints remain

Article Abstract:

Significant barriers to trade with Vietnam remain even as the US now 'officially' encourages trade with the Communist nation. The absence of a bilateral trade agreement, for instance, makes Vietnamese exports to the US subject to higher column 2 tariffs, instead of lower column 1 duties granted to countries with the Most Favored Nation status. A Vietnamese supreme court ruling has removed liability from a privately-owned bank that issued letters of credit that were in default, prompting Spain's government export agency to refuse letters of credit from Vietnamese banks.
