Virtual airline wars

Article Abstract:

Air Canada successfully repulsed a takeover bid by investment firm Onex Corp, partly through the generous use of Internet banner advertising. Onex launched its bid on Aug 24, 1999, after the Canadian government temporarily suspended competition rules to allow a prive-sector solution to airline restructuring. Both Air Canada and Onex substantially used banner ads on web sites to present their respective views and appeal to the public, with Onex even putting up a dedicated web site. The bid was ruled illegal by the Quebec Superior Court on Nov 5, 1999.
