An Internet service that allows users to buy products ranging from fast-food to stationery is being tested in Hong Kong. The Web Connection, which maintains the site, believes that cybershopping has a healthy future. However, one serious problem that could discourage potential customers is the lack of security for Internet transactions. One company seeking a solution is US-based CyberCash which is developing software to protect credit-card details. Analysts suggest that cybershopping in Asia will take some time to become popular, partly because of the lack of telephone lines.

Governments can hinder Internet users from gaining access to certain material, but determined users can circumvent government-imposed barriers. Countries which have sought to censor the Internet include Singapore and China. Pornography, political and religious material may be considered problematic, as is news about a country that has not been approved by that country's censors. There are few users in China, but censorship may become more difficult as the number of users increases.

The Internet can be used for travel arrangements in a number of ways. Bookings can be made by e-mail and information can be obtained on flights and hotels. Internet travel services tend to be more advanced in the US and Europe than they are in Asia and this includes Web sites for the same company, such as Cathay Pacific, which offers seat auctions in the US but not in Hong Kong. Travelers can also use new small computers from Toshiba and Psion on their journeys.
