Visa flap roils Sino-U.S. relations as other tiffs loom

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration has decided to issue a transit visa to Taiwanese VP Li- Yuan-zu. Political analysts noted that the issuance of the visa could spur rifts in US-Sino relations but its magnitude not the be the same as Taiwanese Pres. Lee Teng-hui's state visit in Jun. 1995. Nonetheless, they believe that issues over the US' relations with Taiwan will continue to plague US-Sino relations. Other possible issues that could spark diplomatic tensions include China's continued human rights violations and its failure to curb copyright infringements.

New U.S. envoy to China calls for mutual efforts

Article Abstract:

Newly-appointed Ambassador to China James Sasser hopes to encourage mutual cooperation between the US and China in resolving several key issues which have marred bilateral diplomatic relations. Observers believe that Sasser's close ties with Pres. Bill Clinton and VP Al Gore will compensate his apparent inexperience in China and ignorance of the Chinese languages. His close association with Clinton and Gore will ensure that he will have a direct line to the White House, which his predecessor, Stapleton Roy, did not possess.
