Vodafone, Reliance gear up for battle in India: possible bidding war for big cellular firm shows allure of emerging markets

Vodafone Group PLC and Reliance Communications Ltd. are both poised to bid to acquire Hutchison Essar Ltd., India's fourth-largest cellular service provider. If Reliance acquires Hutchison Essar, it will be the top cellular service provider in India. India's cell phone subscriber base is growing rapidly, due to a strong economy.

VimpelCom bids for Ukrainian firm

Article Abstract:

Vimpel-Communications of Russia has offered to acquire Kyivstar of the Ukraine for $5 billion. The deal may be held up by infighting amongst major shareholders at Vimpel-Communications. The mobile phone acquisition would create the largest wireless carrier in the former Soviet Union.

Vimpelcom is hit with tax claim for $160 Million

Article Abstract:

Vimpelcom, Russia's second largest cellular telephone company, was served with a $160 million claim for back taxes, interest and fines by Russian authorities, fearing spreading attacks on other blue chip companies. Russian securities are down 5.5%.
