The US and India are at odds over what the US sees as policies that allow the theft of intellectual property. India counters that its loose patent laws allow its poor to be able to purchase drugs cheaply. There is also disagreement over India's purchase of Russian satellite technology.

The US has prohibited India from buying a satellite launching rocket, to prevent India from developing nuclear weapons capabilities. But depriving India from acquiring rockets has also frustrated its efforts to compete in the commercial launching of satellites.
